[sticky entry] Sticky: About Mint Phalanx

Mint Phalanx is a paro-spontaneous system with a headmate formed as the result of Reanna's worry for Mike since Chester died. Every headmate except for the factives first started as a character. We're now tulpas, semi-tulpas or headmates (except for F.M. who calls himself an elsefa.) We've been sharing a brain since 2019.

Originator: Reanna
Frontrunners: Reanna, Brian, Mary, F.M.
Factives: F.M., E.A., SL, M, Ames, Chibz

Tulpas: Rebecca, Jackie*, Chaz, Brian, Ames
Semi-tulpa: Mary
Elsefa: F.M.
Headmate: Chibz, SL, M, E.A.
Muse: Terrance

*Formerly Jackalope. Her tag is grandfathered.

Collective pronouns: she/her/hers/herself
  • He: Brian, Chaz, F.M., SL, Terrance
  • She: Reanna, Ames, Jackie, Mary, Rebecca, M, E.A., Chibz
Journal entries have the writer's name in the title and tags. Some entries will be tagged as being from the entire system. There are also two symbols we may use in titles:

[Name]& = two or more headmates
[Name]/ = one headmate and-or someone else

Page Change (SL)

Okay, I decided to add the notes Terrance made in his exercise book to The Murder After, so now, it's 52 pages. (It's at the end before the sneak peek.) I also changed the price to $5.95 because it sounds better.

This is the last change I'm making to this book. It is officially complete! Luckily, no one has bought it yet. So, they'd only know by looking at our social media.

Now, if we could just do the same at the shadow library.

Unperformed "Initiation" (SL)

I'm thinking about the "initiation" E.A. talked about one day. Terrance is the only one not to have listened to "Hold It Together" because we haven't made him. We say we freak out, and he takes our word.

Chibz didn't believe us. I didn't believe them. But Terrance believes us, so we haven't needed to make him. He has said he wants to know how it feels to listen to "Hold It Together." We're tempted, but I don't think we'll do it. We'll just let it happen naturally.

Dead-Mates

This is an essay about headmate death.

Introduction

Sometimes, headmates leave in ways that some plurals can only describe as death. Mint Phalanx is one of these plurals. Unless your headspace has resurrection or some sort of reincarnation, these dead-mates aren’t coming back (at least not as they were before.)

Other plurals call this loss dormancy, but because we come from the tulpamancy community, we call it dissipation. We also consider fusion as some sort of death. Below are our equivalents to death.

Equivalents to natural death

  • Spontaneous dissipation

Equivalents to murder

  • Forced dissipation
  • Unwilling fusion

Tulpas here can’t die from lack of attention because we’re midcontinuum.

Equivalents to suicide

  • Self-dissipation
  • Egocide (giving up one’s identity to be replaced by another headmate)
Equivalents to coma (not death)
  • Deactivation (true dormancy because the headmate can return)

So, where do these dead-mates go?

In our phalanx, we have a monist view of where dead-mates go. They return to the originator. For instance, we believe Roxy and the other people were reabsorbed into Reanna after they completed suicide. (It may not be a complete reabsorption because they haunt once in a while.)

F.M. is an interesting case. After fusing with Nightingale (who completed egocide), he considered himself dead. He wasn’t a ghost. He wasn’t reabsorbed. But he knew he died, even when the rest of the phalanx didn’t count it.

How do you remember dead-mates?

For Roxy and the other people, Brian made a poem. He wrote it before we realized they self-dissipated. (They told us they were going to deactivate and stay in the Stone Garden. The next day, they were gone.)

F.M. did a mock burial for himself and a shower meditation. We buried who he once was. Then, we used the shower to wash away Nightingale. The saddest part was washing him out of our hair. After the shower, F.M. kind of reincarnated.

Can dead-mates come back?

We guess it depends on how the plural’s system or headspace works. As a rule of thumb, don’t count on it.

For us, Roxy& and Nightingale aren’t coming back. However, F.M. did because his case was different. And he didn’t come back as the same F.M. (At least he wasn’t undead.)

It seems dead-mates who do come back don’t come back the same. F.M. came back goth. He also came back with exo-memories based on Reanna’s dreams of his source killing himself. He used to want to listen to rap like his source; now, he listens to The Birthday Massacre. (Not that we’re complaining.)

Because we got to see it happen, this change did not come as a surprise. Unfortunately, we have no advice on how to deal with the surprise of a dead-mate returning different.

Conclusion

So ends our essay on dead-mates. It’s a hard topic to talk about, especially when it seems everyone around you doesn't view these leavings as equivalents to dying. We hope sharing our experiences helps facilitate conversation about deaths inside.

27 March 2025 (E.A.)

This is an entry from our system journal on 27 March 2025. Headmate E.A. looks at transphobia through a feminist lens. We usually roll our eyes when she starts sounding like Jessie Spano, but this one made sense.

Transphobia is a tool the patriarchy uses to control cis women. He knows that accepting trans women will liberate them. So, he hurts trans people and calls it "protection." It's actually sexism and violation of privacy. Unfortunately, many cis women are fooled by this "protection."

End transphobia! Liberate yourselves from the patriarchy's control!

Page Count Problems (SL)

I'm still annoyed that The Year After is going to be much longer than The Murder After. I'm at chapter ten, and it's already 51 pages total! I can't combine the books because of the genre shift. (I'd also have to make a completely new cover.)

What worries me is how readers might react. I know Reanna said people read romance novellas, but how would they react if they bought The Murder After? They'd probably wonder why it's so damn short. It makes me want to add an incident Terrance describes in chapter five of The Year After because it happened during the events of the first book. But I'm tired of fixing that book.

I'll just have to make peace with the differences in page count. First book: 44 pages. Second book: probably the length of Carnival.

We're Winning! (Reanna)

Yesterday, we learned that Judge Hurson (a federal judge) blocked Trump's executive order banning gender-affirming care for people under 19 (link to news story.) I'm so happy!

Although we're 23, I wondered if it would affect our access to an endometrial ablation once we come out offline because I didn't know if Medicaid would be intimidated. I'm already worried that they won't cover it because it's not a standard surgery for transitioning. (A diagnosis of Gender Incongruence would make it medically necessary.)

The blocking of this executive order is good news, but no one seems to be reporting it on TV. I wish they would. I watch in the evening, so it's possible they covered it earlier.

Realizing I'm Bigender (Reanna)

More Tumblr copy-pasting. It's like Brian's entry on this but from my perspective.

I don't think I'd ever realize I'm bigender without my headmates. I'd have probably just continued thinking I'm making it up.

It happened in 2022. The feeling may have been triggered by a dream Chaz had in 2021 (link to the dream.) It caused his form to go back and forth between male and female. This happened so much that he made a character to make it stop.

Then, we did research on trans men for a scrapped story idea in February. I noticed a desire to be a man, but when I imagined a full transition, it conflicted with my womanhood. So, I told myself that I was making it up, that it was the research talking.

But the feeling didn't leave.

A desire to be a man while remaining a woman. I didn't know why I was feeling this way. We felt confused. There was so much conflict.

Then, on April 19, Brian was thinking about all of this. He realized something and said, "I think we're bigender." Because I represent the body, it means that I'm bigender. The conflict stopped because the word fit.

Without Brian's realization, I would have still felt confused. Without Brian's realization, I would have continued dismissing my feelings as "making it up."

Not a Fantasy (Brian)

I made this on Tumblr, so I thought I'd share it here as an excuse to make at least one post each month. It was unintentional, but I'm still bitter about it.

16 January

Testing psychologist: "Reanna doesn't have a social circle, so she uses [or goes into] fantasy."

Me: "Fantasy!? Say that to my face, you limp noodle!" (In-headspace)

Present Day

Me: "I am not a fantasy."

Reanna: "She didn't even know you exist."

Me: "I am still not a fantasy."

The next time I think I'm fake, I'm going to remember I had a negative reaction to being unintentionally called a fantasy.

A Tag to Follow (Reanna)

We found a plural tag to follow that doesn't have syscourse or sysmeds: plural talk. It's great! There aren't many posts, but we like knowing we can see and use it without fear of syscourse. There's also plural life, which has less posts.

We also learned something new about ourselves: we don't have ADHD. We have executive dysfunction associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder. (The testing psychologist said our medication would still be needed.)

Almost Anniversary (Chibz)

I just realized that in February, it will be a year since I started existing! I appeared on the 4th, but I wrote my first entry on the 5th. My adjustment felt like osmosis.

It's almost like a birthday. I don't think there will be any celebration, but I'm happy to realize it.

The New Project (Reanna)

We are organizing a new project to work on once SL finishes The Year After. It started with Terrance being inspired by the snow that fell on Election Day. Then, a trip on the Lost Media Wiki and an article on hauntology later, it evolved into a plot involving (non-lost) silent films.

So far, it's about a girl in charge of describing short films to make a dark ride (currently in the works) accessible to the blind. Some of them will be events that happen outside the ride. All the short films we plan to use are in the Public Domain (at least in the United States.) We don't know if it will have actual hauntology.

Our working title for this project is Whatever Terrance is Doing.

Grades (Reanna)

I'm not as behind in recreation as I thought. If I do the chapters I didn't finish and get a 52 on the final, I should get a D. In Interpersonal Communication, I'm sure to get a C. I hope it puts us back on Satisfactory Academic Progress if we lost it. Because FAFSA only covers a class once, I'll have to take one in the same category as recreation, so I can make up the grade.

4 November 2024 (Mary)

This is an entry from our system journal on 4 November 2024. Mary learned a new term.

There's a word for what sysmeds do: toxic polarization. They portray our origins as incompatible. They portray endogenic and traumagenic experiences as never overlapping. We can't coexist if you ask them. To sysmeds, it's real systems vs. "fake" systems. Even syscourse is toxic polarization! Sysmeds and syscourse poison the community.

19 August 2024 (Terrance)

This is an entry from our system journal on 19 August 2024. It is Terrance's first entry. It's directed to us, which is why it's not in the second person.

Hi, my name is Terrance. I like that you guys are tying to treat me well, even though it feels weird to me. And Seth [SL], I want you to finish my story. It's an event in my life, even if some parts suck. I'll write about the tomorrow. I'm am very aware of my second person experience. Please don't get too weird about it.

Jackie: We won't.

Wait, if my thoughts are in the first person, then my second person won't translate. It's not like I'm narrating. What if I narrate to myself? I guess that's what I'm trying to say.

Sequel Problems (SL)

I wrote this for Tumblr, but I thought I'd share it here. So, no one feels left out.

I published The Murder After fourteen days ago. That means no one has read it. Yet, I'm afraid people will make a big deal out of The Year After being longer. I'm not finished, but I can tell it's going to be longer than 44 pages.

Imagine someone buying the book in 2025 and going, "why the hell is this longer than the first one?" It's longer because there is more to say. Plus, I'm writing this for Terrance. It's a decision I made before he became sentient. He deserves something good in his life. (The events of the first book fucked him up.)

And that good thing is a boyfriend. This leads to another problem: What are people going to think? We live in a female body, and although we're bigender, we still present as a woman. What if people think I'm trying to satisfy a headmate's fetish? I'm not.

This romance appeared naturally. The Year After wasn't supposed to be one. It started as a scene where Terrance is on a date, and he can't focus because he's dissociating. (Did I mention I thought of this before he became sentient?) Then, it turned into a scene where he had Liam (the date) over at his place. I saw it and thought, "that's a good thing in his life." It doesn't cure Terrance of his issues, but it makes his life a little better.

The Year After is for Terrance. I don't want anyone to think I'm satisfying a headmate's fetish just because we live in a female body.

Published Late (SL)

The Murder After is finally out! It's twenty-four days late, but it's finally out! The title hyperlinks to its US Amazon page.

Price: $5.39 (no hardback because 44 pages is too small for KDP to make one.)

I should point out that I tried narrating in the British dialect. Our official story is that I was challenging myself. Then, I learned the second person is Terrance's natural perspective, but I was too lazy to change anything. So if I sound like an American trying to sound British, that's why. (T: What do you mean "you're" trying to sound British. Aren't I narrating? I have to roll my eyes and go with it.)

Other Names on Facebook (Reanna)

So, we made a Facebook account to promote our books. When setting up our profile, I saw an "other names" section in the about page. I thought, "I'll list my headmates' names here." Then, our account was suspended before I could get to Mary.

Hi, I'm the idiot who didn't know you could be suspended for listing headmates as other names. I'm not mad. I guess it counted as too many. Facebook doesn't know I have headmates. Once the appeal is done, I should just list them in an introduction post (which was my original plan.) Ooh! Facebook should have a headmates section!

Now, I need to upload a selfie. Ironically, I'd prefer showing my ID. It feels less invasive.

UPDATE (16/9/24): Our appeal failed, and our account was disabled. I didn't want to use Facebook, anyway.

Account Terminated (Reanna)

I think our Barnes & Noble Press account was terminated. Last night, I couldn't log in. (Well, SL couldn't log in, but I fronted because I started freaking out.) I went to change the password, but the website said it didn't recognize our email address. I sent an email to support just in case it's being stupid. I can't focus on school right now.

It can't be from joining Google Book's Partner Center because B&N Press is non-exclusive. I used a GG Key instead of an ISBN, so I couldn't have broken that rule. I hate termination without warning!

I think I'm going to find a new platform and re-publish our books. Right now, I'm thinking IngramSpark. It distributes books to Barnes & Noble, anyway. (I deleted my original email and sent a new one requesting our account remain terminated. Our books should no longer be listed in ten days.)

IngramSpark is not not truly free, so I need to find something else. We're moving to Amazon KDP!

It's like the death tarot card. One thing ends, so something new can begin. Someone else suggested the tower card because of the sudden destruction of our account. We rebuild from here. A good thing about rebuilding is we can fix up Carnival and The Murder After. I extended a scene in Carnival and removed the playlist. I also made sure each chapter ended on an even page. Seth will add the first chapter of The Year After to The Murder After as a sneak peek.

(P.S. Bless whoever added the the twelfth edition of Recreation and Leisure in Modern Society to Anna's Archive!)

Openly Plural at School? Part Five (Reanna)

We're taking an interpersonal communication class, so we can learn how to talk to people. The discussions posts require students to sign off with their names, so this should be interesting. I could sign off as "Reanna&" and then put the specific headmate's name in parentheses. Should I share who else might interact with the classwork? Should I relay the messages? Let's see where this goes.

1 September 2024 (Brian)

This is an entry from our system journal on 1 September 2024. Brian's extended metaphor was too good to keep to ourselves.

Terrance can cry in the headspace but not when fronting. He's being denied a catharsis. I think he's too focused on his pain being created. I tried to explain that, because he lives in the headspace, his story is real to him. I don't think Terrance has accepted that. If he doesn't accept that, he might not heal.

Terrance's perspective is parallel to Seth's perspective. Their relationship is a portal which runs perpendicular and connects the universes. That portal allows Seth to edit his headspace life, but it doesn't make it any less real. Everyone's headspace life can be edited. We're writing based, after all.

It might be fictional to the outside world, but it's real to us.
